What is an ORal Surgeon?
Saving Faces & Changing Lives
A Rigorous Training Program
Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery (OMS) is a dental specialty that focuses on a broad range of conditions related to the facial region. The training to become an OMS is an intense commitment requiring many years of dedication. Oral & Maxillofacial surgeons complete more post-graduate training than any other specialty in dentistry. After four years each of undergraduate study and dental school, they apply for a four- or six-year hospital-based residency at one or more major trauma and children’s hospitals. This residency includes several month rotations in internal medicine and anesthesia as well as up to a year of a general surgery internship with rotations in trauma, plastics, ICU and head and neck surgery. This rigorous training in dentistry, medicine and surgery makes an OMS uniquely qualified to treat various conditions of both the oral cavity and facial regions.
